What Is Paraxanthine? The Caffeine Metabolite, Explained
Paraxanthine is the compound your body makes when it breaks down caffeine. Roughly 70 to 80% of the caffeine you drink becomes paraxanthine in the liver, and it is responsible for a large share of what people experience as caffeine's alertness effect. It is now available directly as an ingredient, which is why it appears in NOURO.

What paraxanthine is
When you drink coffee, your liver metabolises caffeine into three compounds: paraxanthine, theobromine and theophylline. Paraxanthine is by far the largest share, roughly 70 to 80%. In other words, much of what you feel from coffee is not caffeine acting directly but paraxanthine acting on your behalf.
Until recently you could only get paraxanthine by drinking caffeine and waiting for your body to convert it. It is now produced as a standalone ingredient, sold under names such as enfinity®, which means it can be dosed directly without the caffeine that precedes it.
Paraxanthine vs caffeine
| Caffeine | Paraxanthine | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The parent compound in coffee and tea | The main metabolite your body converts caffeine into |
| Onset | Fast, then a pronounced peak and dip | Studied for a steadier profile |
| Conversion | Depends on your individual metabolism, which varies widely | Delivered directly, so conversion speed matters less |
| Anxiety and jitters | Common at higher doses | Studied against caffeine with interest in lower anxiety |
| Evidence base | Enormous, decades deep | Small and recent. This is the honest weak point. |
What the research actually says
Paraxanthine has been examined in peer-reviewed human research against caffeine for cognitive performance, with attention to a smoother subjective profile. That work is genuine, and it is also early: a handful of studies rather than the decades of literature behind caffeine.
So the accurate framing is that paraxanthine is a promising alternative delivery of a well-understood effect, not a proven upgrade. Anyone telling you it is definitively better than caffeine is ahead of the evidence.
Dosing and timing
Paraxanthine is used in the low hundreds of milligrams. NOURO contains 200 mg. Because it supports daytime alertness, it is designed to be taken in the morning. Taking it late in the day risks the same sleep disruption you would expect from caffeine.
Who should be careful
- Anyone sensitive to caffeine or stimulants
- People who are pregnant or nursing
- Anyone with a heart rhythm condition or uncontrolled high blood pressure
- People taking medication that interacts with stimulants, which is worth checking with a pharmacist
Paraxanthine in NOURO
NOURO pairs 200 mg of paraxanthine with 450 mg of Alpha GPC (GeniusPure®) as its same-day layer, then adds five ingredients for the longer-term layer: Berbevis® berberine, Siliphos® milk thistle, taurine, alpha-lipoic acid and vitamin B3. Every amount is on the label; there are no proprietary blends.
The research behind NOURO. The formulation was studied in a preclinical animal model in work presented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference 2026, with a co-author from Duke University Medical Center. It is animal research and has not been established in humans.

Frequently asked questions
What is paraxanthine?
Paraxanthine is one of the compounds your body produces when it metabolises caffeine. Roughly 70 to 80% of the caffeine you drink is converted into paraxanthine in the liver. It is not caffeine itself, and it is now available directly as a supplement ingredient.
Is paraxanthine better than caffeine?
It has been studied against caffeine in human research for cognitive performance, with interest in a smoother profile and lower anxiety. The research base is far smaller than caffeine's, so the honest answer is that it looks promising rather than proven superior.
Does paraxanthine keep you awake?
It is a stimulant-adjacent compound, so it is designed for daytime use. NOURO is formulated to be taken in the morning for this reason. Individual sensitivity varies.
How much paraxanthine is in NOURO?
NOURO contains 200 mg of paraxanthine as enfinity®, disclosed on the label alongside every other ingredient amount.
Is paraxanthine safe?
Enfinity® paraxanthine has been through safety evaluation for use as an ingredient. As with caffeine, sensitivity varies between people. If you are pregnant, nursing, sensitive to stimulants or taking medication, speak to your doctor first.
