Electrolyte drinks vs sports drinks: what is the difference?

They are built for different jobs, and the difference is mostly sugar.

Sports drinks

Designed for endurance exercise, where the goal is delivering carbohydrate as fuel alongside fluid. The sugar is the point. A typical bottle carries a meaningful amount of it, which is useful mid-marathon and not useful at a desk.

Electrolyte drinks

Designed for replacing minerals without the carbohydrate load. Useful for low-carb eating, hot weather, illness recovery and general daily hydration where you do not want the sugar.

How to compare two products in 30 seconds

Hands stirring a drink powder into a glass of water
One packet per 8 to 10 oz of water.
  • Sodium per serving in milligrams, not a percentage
  • Potassium and magnesium amounts, disclosed rather than hidden in a blend
  • Total sugar per serving
  • What the sweetener is, if it is sugar-free

If a label will not tell you those four things plainly, that is your answer.
